Ravenwood’s late goal downs Franklin in OT for District 11-AAA title

Ravenwood’s late goal downs Franklin in OT for District 11-AAA title

BRENTWOOD — Ravenwood coach Jessica Mancini had visions of fireworks in her mind, and said she may have even uttered a bad word when the goal reached the net.

The Ravenwood-Franklin girls soccer rivalry has become that big of a deal.

Kami Lobliner scored with 20 seconds left in the second overtime period Thursday to give Ravenwood a 2-1 victory for the District 11-AAA title between the teams that met in last year's state championship.

"I was on my last burst of energy," Lobliner said. "It took me a second to process (the goal). Before I could process it everyone was on top of me and then my leg just cramped. I was done."

Both teams will advance to region tournament play. But winning this one meant a lot.

It was a marathon that looked like it was headed for a scoreless tie — the way the teams' previous meeting this season ended — until the second half when they each scored a goal in a one-minute span.

Ravenwood's Leah Johnson headed in a goal but Franklin's Charlotte Robertson answered near the 18:00 mark to tie.

Lobliner's winner looked unlikely until senior Ally Brown led a drive down the field and dumped off a pass near the goal, sending the Raptors (9-2-2) into a frenzy.

"When we play Franklin any time, it's going to be close no matter what," Mancini said. "We just happened to top one (goal) in in the last 20 seconds."

Ravenwood edged Franklin 1-0 for last year's state title to claim its second state championship in a row. Again, the two teams have proven they're likely the two to beat for this year's crown.

Region 6-AAA tournament play begins Oct. 19.

"We honestly needed this win for confidence, and (to do it) against our biggest rival at the moment, it just feels great," Lobliner said.

Franklin (6-2-3) is working through injuries to leading scorer Yukino Wakatsuki and Ava Weimer. The Admirals nearly re-tied the score in the final 10 seconds of overtime, but the shot missed wide.

They know there's a possibility they could see Ravenwood again.

"It's tough, it really is, because they put so much into it and wanted to win a district championship," Franklin coach Mike Burgoyne said. "I told them, the great thing is you've got another game. This game is over. Look at them celebrating: Maybe next time it's you."
