SPRING HILL – Two free throws in the final 20 seconds, one by Bubba Perkins and the final by tournament MVP Q Martin, lifted Columbia Central to the District 12-4A boys basketball tournament championship Saturday at Summit High School.
The Lions claimed a 56-54 win in the title tilt with the Lady Raptors battling past host Summit to clinch the girls' championship 49-43 in another tight game. Both teams will hold top seeds at the upcoming Region 6-4A tournament hosted by Summit.
Martin accounted for 10 of his team's first 15 points, but the Raptors countered with 22 points from six different players. The Lions closed out the first half on a 20-5 run, with Ravenwood's points coming from a single basket and three free throws, taking a 32-27 lead into the break.
Mulder and Lee Molette pulled the Raptors even by scoring all 14 points for their team in the third quarter, including a pair of buckets by Molette with the second on a no-look assist from Mulder that silenced a raucous Columbia crowd celebrating a thunderous Martin dunk prior.
The Lions turned up the heat in the fourth quarter, capitalizing on a couple Raptor errors for quick transition baskets and built their biggest lead, 53-45, at the four-minute mark. But that's when Raptor senior DJ Starr, who was held silent in the third frame, took over and scored nine of his team-high 19 points in the final four minutes.
When Martin missed the backside of a one-and-one opportunity with 8.4 seconds left, the ball wound up in Starr's hands. He drove to the basket, but the heavily contested shot bounced off the rim and time ran out as Starr battled on the floor for the basketball.
Jordan Davis and AJ Pillow added 13 points each in support of Martin. Molette tossed in 13 and Mulder contributed 12 points and a double handful of rebounds as he established himself as a force in the interior.
The Lions will face District 11-4A fourth-seed Brentwood at 7:30 p.m. next Saturday as one of the top seeds in the regional. It will be the Lions' eighth straight region appearance. Columbia has exited in first round the past seven years.
Ravenwood opens the boys' portion of the regional event with a scheduled 3 p.m. tilt next Saturday against Centennial, which took third with a buzzer-beater over Brentwood in the District 11-4A tournament Saturday.
Independence took the third seed by stopping tourney host Summit 70-60 in the boys' consolation game. Four Eagles scored double figures led by Owen Ries and Tyus Anderson, who both had 17. Cameron Bell spread 13 points across four quarters and Jett Montgomery had 12.
Independence controlled the game from the start, holding a 19-point advantage at the half at 41-22, and increased the lead to as many as 24 before freshman Issac Power and sophomore Bradley Stewart tried to spark a rally. The pair combined for 17 points in the fourth, cutting the Eagles' lead to as few as six before the comeback fell short.
Power finished with 17 and Bradley had 11. Kade Lenfestey, another sophomore, also finished with 11 points, marking scratches in each time frame.
Indy will open the regional Saturday at 6 p.m. against Hillsboro, while Summit takes on the other top seed in Franklin at 4:30 p.m.
On the girls' side, Ravenwood won a see-saw nail-biter 49-4 over Summit that was a second-half chess match. The Lady Raptors let a 26-18 halftime advantage slip away behind the aggressive offense of Nicole Rizane and Cydney Wright in the third quarter.
Down 36-35 to start the fourth, tournament MVP Reghan Grimes did what she has done so many times and took charge of the game. Held to just a pair of free throws in the first half, Grimes took control of the glass while pouring in 10 of her game-high 16 points to secure the victory.
The Lady Raptors got 12 points from Emma Rayl, who opened the contest by nailing three straight 3-pointers in the first quarter, outscoring the Lady Spartans by herself in that time span.
Claudette Runk added 10 points for Summit.
Summit will open the Region 6-4A tournament on Friday, with a 4 p.m. date with Franklin. Ravenwood will play in the 8:30 p.m. nightcap, taking on Centennial, which dropped a 38-36 consolation game to the Lady Admirals in the District 11-4A tournament.
Saturday's first game saw the Columbia Central girls march past Independence 66-46 despite some technical problems with the clock and scoreboard. Janiyha Riley led the Lady Lions with 26-points, Saviya Morgan had 14 and Josie Parks 13 for the winners.
Ryan Brown had 15 to lead Independence.
Columbia will play District 11-4A runner-up Brentwood Friday at 7 p.m. Independence will get Hillsboro, the top seed in 11-4A, in a first-round contest Friday at 5:30 p.m.
