Hoops: Ravenwood splits with Columbia in district play

BRENTWOOD – Weather forecasters have warned Middle Tennesseans that the early arrival of cold air could mean very significant accumulations of snow over the weekend.

Based on the shooting of the Ravenwood High School boys basketball team in the second half of Friday night's 57-54 loss to Columbia Central, we could be in line for a blizzard of historical proportions.

After pouring in 35 points from the floor in the first, the Raptors managed only five field goals in the entire second half, including just one in a disastrous third quarter.

"Credit Columbia Central for that," said a disappointed Ravenwood coach Patrick Whitlock. "Part of it was our not hitting shots and part of that was their defensive effort in the second half after we got pretty much what we wanted in the first half. We did not answer the bell in time."

DJ Starr, Matt Williams and Jake Mulder, who scored 11, nine and nine points respectively in the first half, were held to just 10 total points in the second half. Equally effective was the Lions ability to keep Ravenwood off the boards in the final 16 minutes.

Columbia kept the Raptors off guard with a three-headed scoring attack led by Jordan Davis who dropped in 19 points, with help from Bubba Perkins (17) and Q. Martin (15).

"Columbia is one of the top 15 teams in the state for a reason and they showed it in the second half tonight," Whitlock said. "They are a physical team, but that's 4A basketball. They play with a lot of heart and intensity. We had to try and match their physicality, and at times we did, but for the full body of work we didn't.

"That's the way it's going to be Tuesday night at Independence and next Friday against Summit. We just kind of let it get away."

The win leaves the Lions 1-0 in District 12-4A play, 14-2 overall, with a critical district contest at Summit looming Tuesday. In between, Columbia will visit Spring Hill Saturday night, weather permitting, in an intra-county rivalry.

Ravenwood (13-5, 1-1) travels to district rival Independence Tuesday night.

After a furious comeback, Columbia pulled in front of Ravenwood 54-53 with just under five minutes to play Friday night.

That's when Reghan Grimes took over. And when she was done, the Lady Raptors went home with a 72-61 victory.

Grimes put Ravenwood back on top by one, 55-54 with a strong post move in the middle with 4 1/2 minutes to play. Over the next 270 seconds she scored 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds to nearly single-handedly crush any hopes the visiting Lady Lions had of mounting one more comeback.

The work on the boards, even more than the scoring, impressed Ravenwood coach Andrew James.

"Reghan and Elizabeth Flynn are incredible rebounders; they just know where the ball is going to go and they take over," he said. "It's nothing new for us to see Reghan grab those rebounds. When it came down to it, the defense picked up and we knew we could close it out, Reghan really stepped up."

Grimes finished the game with 29 points, 15 in the fourth quarter alone.

It was not as easy a win as the score, and the late domination, might indicated. On at least three occasions Columbia erased deficits up to 10 points to tie the game before eventually going ahead late.

"I thought we were going to have a chance to maybe pull away, but man they hit some shots," James said. "Josie Panes and Janiyha Riley are great players and they put runs on us. But I'm so proud we kept answering them by stepping up and knocking down big shots."

Panes dropped in 26 for Columbia. Riley added 21.

The win leaves the Lady Raptors atop District 12-4A with a 2-0 record and an 11-7 overall worksheet. Columbia falls to 6-10, 0-1 in the district.
